Danny Maciocia
General Manager/
Director of Football Operations
Danny Maciocia became the General Manager and Director of Football Operations on November 27, 2008. Maciocia spent the past four seasons as Head Coach of the Eskimos and was the first Canadian-born head coach since Annis Stukus (1949-’51). In 2007, Danny added the role of Director of Football Operations to his duties. Danny spent his first three seasons with the Esks as Offensive Coordinator. Born in Montreal (May 26,1967), Danny got his coaching start in 1993 as an assistant with a junior squad that won the under-19 national championship. The following season, Maciocia was Offensive Coordinator for the St. Leonard Cougars, winners of the Eastern Canadian Championship. In 1995, Danny was named Head Coach of St. Leonard and also handled the Offensive Coordinator duties for the Eastern Canadian National 19-and-under championship team. Danny got his CFL start by volunteering as a quality control coach with the Montreal Alouettes in 1996 and eventually earned a job as an Offensive Assistant in 1998 looking after running backs. Earning the role of Offensive Coordinator in 2001, Danny built a powerful offence in Montreal that featured the likes of Mike Pringle, Anthony Calvillo and Tracy Ham. During the 1998 and 1999 off-seasons, Danny coached the Bergamo Lions of the Italian Football League to back-to-back Italian Super Bowl victories. Bergamo was a perfect 10-0 in the ‘99 regular season. Coming to Edmonton in 2002, Danny re-built the Eskimo offence around rookie quarterback Ricky Ray. Bringing originality and innovation to the Eskimo playbook, Danny’s work was instrumental in Edmonton’s Grey Cup berth in 2002 and championship season in 2003. In 2005, Danny became the first head coach in Eskimo history to lead the team to a Grey Cup victory after a third place regular season finish. Danny is fluent in English, French and Italian. He, his wife Sandra Vaz and their daughters, Bianca, Juliana and Alessia, reside in St. Albert, Alberta.
Dedicated to the development of Canadian football players and coaches, Danny has also served as Head Coach of Team Canada’s squad at the NFL Global Junior Championships - an international amateur football tournament that takes place each year in conjunction with Super Bowl festivities. In 2006, Danny’s squad won gold for the second consecutive year.
